Please create some pictures of glasswashers and dishwashers! Ehhh...?! Ok.
The commissioned work EAT – DRINK – WASH – REPEAT expresses the whole world of the endlessly repeating cycle of feasting, indulging, drinking, celebrating and travelling. Worldwide, any place, on land, on water, in the air.
Every element has already been conquered by us humans. And what comes next? Many helpers, gobbling monsters, demolishers of left-overs, and helpful machines that make living in our industrialised world easier.
It is fascinating to see how everything is tidied away again, cleaned, made ready for a new start.
Dishes and cutlery into the machine, washed and polished, back on the shelves and – bingo!
Eat, drink, wash, and start the cycle again...
Technique: acrylic paint and acrylic markers on canvas
Born in Cernay in Alsace in 1959, passionate comic fan and bon vivant, has been painting and drawing since childhood.
The confinement of the first lockdown during the pandemic boosted his creativity, and he has been painting almost nonstop ever since. Serendipity had it that he could then exhibit his art for the first time in the small BACKHOUSE gallery in Achern, Germany.
Self-taught, he never attended arts school or had formal training. His pictures are of a raw authenticity. They mirror our society with its wounds and excesses but also show the small details that make life worthwhile.
If pressed to categorize his style, you would probably label it ART BRUT, "raw art".
Serge Riegert does not rely on established bourgeois standards, but on topics that reflect everyday madness. Disregarding the norms of linear perspective as well as theories of colours and material, he just goes right in, expresses himself, and "throws" his feelings and stories onto the canvas.
In this way, he creates impressive pictures illustrating moments in time, scenes from life, always somehow enigmatic and authentic, with a view of the essential things, sometimes tragic and yet full of empathy.
